2019 PRUDENTIAL RIDELONDON-SURREY 100: THE RIDERS’ STORIES

Sports stars David Seaman, Dani Rowe and Martin Johnson are among the famous faces in the field of more than 25,000 riders taking on the challenge of the 2019 Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday 4 August.

Goalkeeping legend Seaman is riding for the British Heart Foundation, which, in association with the Miles Frost Fund, is the official Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 Charity of the Year. The former Arsenal and England goalkeeper is a keen cyclist and he will be making his debut in the event.

Joining Seaman is Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Rowe, who won gold at the 2012 London Olympics alongside fellow track stars Laura Kenny and Joanna Rowsell in the team pursuit. Now retired, Rowe is also riding for the British Heart Foundation.

England’s former World Cup winning rugby captain Martin Johnson returns to ride the 100-mile sportive for the sixth time after completing last year’s event despite a serious of punctures slowing his progress.

Pop star and TV personality Michelle Heaton is riding the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46 for the first time for a charity close to her heart, Prevent Breast Cancer. The former Liberty-X singer was diagnosed with the BRCA2 gene in 2012 and underwent elective surgery to prevent her developing breast and ovarian cancer in the future. Prevent Breast Cancer is the inaugural Charity of the Year for the 46-mile sportive.

Alongside the stars of sports and entertainment will be tens of thousands of fundraisers, many riding for very personal reasons. Surrey County Council Leader Tim Oliver, 58, from Surrey, is riding Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 for The Brain Tumour Charity who supported his daughter Emily after her grade-4 cancer diagnosis in January 2018. Initially suspected to be suffering from an inner-ear infection, Emily was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour and given only three months to live. Emily fought the disease for 18 months but sadly passed away in July 2019. Tim will be riding with his brother-in-law and a friend to honour her memory.

Mandy Canning, 47, from Airdrie, has signed up to take part in the 100-mile sportive for the first time, raising money for the charity Parkinson’s UK after her father Pat was diagnosed with the disease eight years ago. She will be joined by her partner Helen and they hope to raise awareness for the charity that has provided their family with invaluable support and advice since Pat’s diagnosis.

Matthew Oomen, 45, from London, is riding in memory of his brother-in-law Eddy, who was killed in a road traffic accident in July 2018. Eddy was on his way to work on his motorbike when a van hit him, causing irreparable brain damage; he died in hospital nine days later. Matthew is riding to raise awareness for the charity RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims, who has supported Eddy’s widow and young son since his death.

Laura Sercombe, 57, from Guildford, is taking part in Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 for the first time for the charity Challengers, for whom she is the Chief Executive Officer. Challengers provides exciting and inclusive play and leisure activities for disabled children and young people. Laura, who is riding with her son and daughter, is riding to celebrate the charity’s 40th anniversary and hopes to raise funds to help ensure the charity continues providing vital services to disabled children in their local area.
