L’EROICA 2015

L’elenco completo comprende: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua&Barbuda, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Azerbajian, Belgio, Brasile, Canada, Cile, Cina, Croazia, Danimarca, Emirati Arabi Uniti, Eritrea, Estonia, Francia, Georgia, Germania, Giappone, Grecia, Guernsey, Irlanda, Isole Cayman, Italia, Lettonia, Liechtenstein, Lussemburgo, Malta, Messico, Moldavia, Monaco, Nuova Caledonia, Nuova Zelanda, Paesi Bassi, Pakistan, Palau, Polonia, Portogallo, Qatar, Regno Unito, Repubblica Ceca, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovacchia, Slovenia, Somalia, Spagna, Sudafrica, Svezia, Svizzera, Swaziland, Tunisia, Turchia, USA.

(Giancarlo Brocci)

L’Eroica 2015: fast approaching 6,000 participants this year

Browsing the list of participants is like taking a bike ride around the world

Browsing the list of participants for L’Eroica is like taking a mini-tour around the world, through a huge variety of languages, cultures, religions and customs. It is also a way to rediscover the geography and history of peoples and countries that we don’t know very well.

This year at L’Eroica, cyclists from 66 different countries will descend on the White Roads of the Siena province. Some countries are large, others are tiny, so tiny as to oblige you to look them up on Google or on the world map that’s hanging in your office. Such is the case of Palau, for example, a tiny country in Micronesia, situated about 500 km east of the Philippines, it is one of the youngest and smallest countries in the world, with its 21,000 inhabitants. Another curious one is Antigua & Barbuda, a Caribbean state that belongs to the Commonwealth and is governed by the United Kingdom; it was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. This year L’Eroica will welcome a cyclist from the island of Aruba which is near the coast of Venezuela, but is administered by the Netherlands. The islands of Guernsey and Jersey are located in the English Channel, a few miles from the French coast but their history links them to the U.K. Each of these islands will be represented in Gaiole in Chianti by one cyclist. South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are situated in the Atlantic and were at the centre of the dispute between Argentina and the U.K. in 1982. These islands are famous for being the State with the least number of inhabitants in the world: just thirty. One of them will cycle the 135 km route. In Macao they speak Portuguese but the government is now a special administrative region of China. This little country will also be represented on Sunday 4 October.

Along with the cyclists of these small and tiny countries, and the others that are perfectly entitled to be included in this category, such as Andorra, Liechtenstein, Cayman Islands, San Marino, New Caledonia, Swaziland, there are all of the largest countries in the world. This is the complete list: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua&Barbuda, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Azerbajian, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eritrea, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Moldavia, Monaco, Netherlands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Palau, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, UK, USA.

The country with most participants is, of course, Italy, with about 3,500 entrants. Italy is followed by Germany (over 500), the UK with over 400 entrants, then Switzerland, France and Austria. A glance at the dates of birth tells us that the youngest riders are just 14 years old; they are German participants Diana Ruebekeil and Jan-Ole Stucke, and Matteo Moroni, from Greve in Chianti. In the “forever young” category, there are three 84-year old riders: American George Pohl and Italians Mario Leoni from Bergamo and Americo Severini from Marche.

Another observation: women have far exceeded 10% of the overall participation.

Finally, a word about the distribution of cyclists among the four different routes: over 4,000 cyclists have chosen the medium routes (75 and 135 km), while well over a thousand will take on the toughest route of 209 km. The others will experience L’Eroica pedalling along the shortest 46 km route which is no less stimulating nor appealing.

The list of participants from cycling’s glorious past is also being put together at the moment. First among them is Felice Gimondi exactly fifty years after his extraordinary victory at the Tour de France. He was 23 years old when he triumphed in the most important race in the world; it will be a pleasure to see him at the starting line, wearing his fantastic yellow jersey.

L’EROICA, POETRY ON A BICYCLE

Since 1997 L’Eroica has been a lesson in how to enhance our environmental heritage, enjoy a sustainable lifestyle and practice clean cycling. This is a world where everyone is a hero in his own way: where the important thing is to show that sacrifice with a smile is possible, if you have a true and healthy passion. (Giancarlo Brocci)
