MORENA TARTAGNI, ALESSANDRA CAPPELLOTTO E MARIANNE VOS

Morena Tartagni, Alessandra Cappellotto and Marianne Vos will be the stars of the eve of L’Eroica, which will take place in Gaiole in Chianti on 5 October 2014.

On the afternoon of 4 October, fans and cyclists from all around the world will have the opportunity to meet the protagonists of female cycling of the last 50 years.

Morena Tartagni had some fantastic wins in the 1960s and 70s. Alessandra Cappellotto won the World Championships in 1997, while the 27 year old Dutch cyclist, Marianne Vos is considered the best female cyclist in history, thanks to her victories in the most important road, track and cyclo-cross competitions.

In the background, we will see images and hear the story of Alfonsina Strada, the only woman ever to participate in the men’s Giro d’Italia, way back in 1924. So the feminine side of heroic cycling will be the focus of this year’s L’Eroica which looks to the future of cycling, with a flavour of the past which is proving to be ever more fashionable.

Marianne Vos is a winning cyclist on the road, track and in cyclo-cross. In fact, she won gold in the points race in the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 and in the road race at the London Olympics in 2012. She is seven times cyclo-cross world champion (2006 and from 2009 to 2014), as well as road champion in 2006, 2012 and 2013, winning silver in the five years from 2007 to 2011.

She is well known to Italian fans for her various victories at the World Cup which is held in Cittiglio (Varese) in March each year and for having twice won the Giro d’Italia. Vos will arrive in Gaiole in Chianti on Saturday afternoon, 4 October, together with her entire team, to finish – in style – the cycling season which will see her centre stage at the Ponferrada world championships 2014: “The staff, my team mates of RaboLiv and I are all enthusiastic about participating in L’Eroica which I’ve always been curious about, so much so that I suggested it as a way to finish the season this year. We are all happy that we can come and do l’Eroica. Everybody is excited and searching for the right materials and gear for October.”

Alessandra Cappellotto was the first Italian woman to become World Champion in San Sebastian in 1997, the year L’Eroica began.

Cappellotto already cycled the White Roads of Siena when she participated in L’Eroica Sud last May. In her career, she has won stages of the Giro d’Italia, the Tour as well as a tricolour time trial in 2001 and on the road in 2003.

Morena Tartagni, in her cycling career, won over 100 victories; 10 Italian titles, 8 on the track and 2 on the road, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze at the World Road Championships.
